Repair vs. Replacement: Know When to Upgrade
Protect Comfort, Performance, and Operating Costs
The success of your business often depends on the comfort of your space—for employees, clients, and guests. When your HVAC system isn’t working properly, it can lead to poor indoor conditions, rising energy bills, and frequent service calls. That’s why it’s important to understand when to repair your unit and when it’s time to replace it.
There are several signs that your commercial HVAC system may need professional service. These include loud or disruptive noises like humming, squealing, or buzzing; excess moisture inside your business; unpleasant odors; and inconsistent room temperatures. You may also notice issues with thermostat controls, short cycling, or water and refrigerant leaks. If your system is visibly malfunctioning or your energy bills are unusually high, it’s a good idea to have it inspected. Equipment nearing the end of its lifespan should also be evaluated to prevent costly failures.
Over time, replacement becomes the more practical option—especially if your unit is more than 15 years old. If the system struggles to maintain a comfortable temperature, requires frequent repairs, or shows excessive wear and tear, it may be time for a new one. As a general rule, if the cost of a repair exceeds 50% of the price of a new unit, replacement is recommended. Not sure what’s right for your building?
